The Christian College & University Employer Protection Checklist
Is your institution's religious mission consistently reflected in its governing documents, employment practices, faculty expectations, benefit plans, and regulatory positions?
This practical checklist will help institutional leaders evaluate mission alignment and identify gaps before an employment dispute, benefits conflict, accreditation concern, or government inquiry places that mission at risk.
The Checklist Will Address:
- ✓ Religious identity and governing documents
- ✓ Faculty and staff mission expectations
- ✓ Faith-based hiring and employment practices
- ✓ Ministerial role evaluation
- ✓ Handbooks and institutional policies
- ✓ Accommodation and protected-leave procedures
- ✓ Healthcare and benefits
- ✓ CEA legal-protection implementation
- ✓ Title IX and federal-funding considerations
- ✓ Student employees and graduate assistants
- ✓ Regulatory readiness
- ✓ Trustee oversight
Institutional Preparation
Many institutions discover gaps in their religious-identity documents, faculty expectations, or benefit plans only after an employment dispute, accreditation review, or government inquiry has already begun.
This checklist gives presidents, trustees, general counsel, and HR leaders a structured way to assess readiness before problems arise, not after.

Christian colleges and universities operate at the intersection of ministry, employment, education, healthcare, and government regulation. That creates risks not ordinarily faced by churches or other Christian employers.
Because these issues can involve institution-specific facts and overlapping federal and state requirements, CEA educational resources should be used with advice from qualified legal counsel.
The issue areas above reflect the complexity Christian colleges and universities face as institutions that combine employment, ministry, education, healthcare, and federal relationships. CEA resources on these topics are in development and will be added as guides become available. Institutions should not assume that a general CEA resource resolves every higher-education-specific issue.
Federal Court Protections for Qualifying CEA Members
Christian Employers Alliance has secured significant federal court protections for qualifying members through CEA v. Azar and CEA v. EEOC/HHS.
Current and future eligible CEA members that affirm CEA's Statement of Faith and satisfy applicable membership and implementation requirements may benefit from protection against specific federal mandates involving abortion-inducing drugs and certain gender-transition-related healthcare and employment requirements. These protections allow participating institutions to benefit from relief already secured without filing and funding a separate lawsuit to seek the same protection.
CEA v. Azar
Abortifacient & Gender Mandate Protection
Permanent federal injunctions protecting qualifying CEA members from government mandates requiring coverage of abortifacients and gender-transition services in their health plans.

EEOC Enforcement Protection
A binding EEOC settlement protecting qualifying CEA members from agency enforcement actions related to religious employment decisions rooted in sincere Christian belief.

The Ministerial Exception
A constitutional doctrine that limits government interference in a religious institution's selection of ministers. Courts examine actual religious duties and responsibilities, not job titles.
Read More →Legal protection depends on eligibility, active CEA membership, affirmation of CEA's Statement of Faith, and proper implementation. The scope of each injunction is determined by the applicable court order. CEA resources are educational and do not create an attorney-client relationship. Institutions should consult qualified counsel concerning their particular circumstances.
A National Alliance for Christian Employers
